Grammy-nominated Reggae star, Buju Banton, was arrested in Miami, FL this past weekend on federal drug charges. Banton and another unidentified man was caught on tape by a surveillance camera in the middle of a cocaine transaction.

DEA claims that they found the singer with five (5) kilos of cocaine and booked him on the charge of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute. The singer faces up to 20 years inprison on the federal charges.

What looked to be an outstanding 2009 for the reggae star, whose real name is Mark Anthony Myrie,  is now closing ’09 out in dreadful fashion. Banton is fresh off the heels of a pretty successful North American tour, made efforts with Gay & Lesbian groups to a resolution over the singer’s historical controversial stance against the gay community (in the early 90’s his song “Boom Bye Bye” advocated shooting gays and burning them alive) and was recently nominated for a Grammy in the Best Reggae Album category for his 2009 release Rasta Got Soul.
